Alligator Signs has been a proud family-run business since 1989, built on hard work, craftsmanship and a genuine passion for sign making. Founded by Rob, the business began at a time when traditional hand-painted signwriting was at the heart of the transport industry across Yorkshire. Trained in the traditional methods of the trade, Rob quickly became well known around Barnsley for his skill and attention to detail. In an era before digital printing and vinyl graphics, every line, shadow and flourish was painted by hand, and Rob’s work became a familiar sight on roads across the region.

As the industry evolved, Rob went on to become a lecturer at Barnsley College, passing his knowledge and traditional techniques on to the next generation of signwriters. Many of the sign makers still operating in Barnsley today were taught by Rob!

Rob’s wife Dawn has played an equally important role in the business, keeping the accounts running smoothly from the very beginning. Today, the next generation is continuing to drive the company forward, with their son Josh managing the business and introducing modern production methods all while staying true to the quality, service and craftsmanship the business was built on.
